Texas City Tops U.S. Migration Destinations

Houston migration destination

Houston migration destinationWhere are people moving to in 2018? Not even the aftermath of a hurricane can keep people away from the Bayou City, because Houston once again topped the list of U.S. migration destinations, according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report [1]. This marks the ninth consecutive year Houston has taken the top slot.

According to U-Haul’s migration trends [2] report, Houston saw a five percent year-over-year (YOY) increase in one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017, cinching its place at the top of U-Haul’s charts. What makes Houston such a popular migration destination?

“We are an international city with a strong housing market,” said Matt Merrill, U-Haul Company of West Houston President. “The cost of living remains relatively inexpensive. The average paycheck goes further in Houston. Many companies are relocating here and bringing jobs to our communities. With U-Haul helping move people to the next chapter of their lives, I’m not surprised Houston is the top destination city again.”

Chicago, Illinois, came in as the second-most-popular migration destination. The Windy City also maintained its same position on the list from the previous year, thanks to an 11 percent YOY increase in one-way U-Haul truck arrivals in 2017.

“Chicago is a walkable city with access to some of the best food in the country,” said Rick Rottweiler, U-Haul Company of North Shore Chicago President. “It’s truly a destination, and the people lucky enough to live here love their city. Our neighborhoods are charming and there are giant green spaces throughout the city.”
