AACER: September Sees Second-Lowest Monthly Bankruptcy Filing Total of 2015

Sponsored Posts [1]Bankruptcy filings nationwide totaled 62,358 for the month of September, the second-lowest total for any month this year, according to September 2015 AACER bankruptcy data [2] reported by Epiq Systems [3].

September 2015's total represented a year-over-year decline of nearly 11,o00 (from 73,352) and a drop of more than 50 percent from the September peak of 134,148 reached in September 2010 at the height of the foreclosure crisis. Only January's total of 59,087 was lower than September's reported number of 62,358.

The number of bankruptcy filings year-to-date for the first nine months of 2015 is 627,614, an average of 69,734 per month and an average of 3,320 per day over 189 filing days. There were 21 filings days in September, which saw an average of 2,969 filings per day.

California topped all states for cumulative year-to-date bankruptcy filings with 62,234 for the first nine months (including 6,222 in September, also tops among states for the month). Illinois was second with 42,910 filings year-to-date as of September 30, 3015, which was more than 500 more than third-place Florida (42,431). Georgia (37,458) and Ohio (28,371) were once again fourth and fifth, respectively. The state with the fewest cumulative filings for the first nine months of 2015 was Alaska with 311 after experiencing just 47 bankruptcy filings in September.

Tennessee and Alabama once again ranked first and second among states in filings per capita for September with 5.81 and 5.41 filings for every 10,000 people, respectively. Both were slight increases from the 5.76 and 5.35 totals reported for August. September's national average in bankruptcy filings per capita (2.70) was virtually unchanged from August's total of 2.70.
