Eileen Fitzgerald Named CEO of NeighborWorks America

""NeighborWorks America"":http://www.nw.org has appointed Eileen M. Fitzgerald as the organization's new CEO, effective June 1.

Fitzgerald has served as acting CEO of the nonprofit community development and housing counseling network since January 2011 when Kenneth Wade stepped down from the position.

Fitzgerald was previously chief operating officer at NeighborWorks starting in 2005. She has 25 years of experience in nonprofit and government leadership.

Before joining NeighborWorks America, Fitzgerald served as senior director of national initiatives at the Fannie Mae Foundation. Prior to that, she was acting executive director and VP of program operations at the McAuley Institute, a national nonprofit intermediary that focuses on improving housing conditions for women and families through community-based efforts.

She also served as the chief investment officer for single-family finance at the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust and was the associate administrator and acting administrator of the USDA Rural Housing Service, where she led the conversion of mortgage servicing to a centralized system. She also served in both Virginia and Maryland state governments.

""The need to assist families and individuals with one of life's basic building blocks â€" a healthy, safe, and affordable home in a vibrant and safe community â€" has never been greater, making NeighborWorks America's mission more critical than ever,"" Fitzgerald said.

NeighborWorks America supports a network of 242 local and regional nonprofit organizations, providing community development training and helping to generate reinvestment in local neighborhoods. The organization also serves as administrator of the ""National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling"":http://www.nw.org/nfmc (NFMC) program created by Congress in January 2008.

""We are committed to working with our many partners, including more than 1,300 local and national foreclosure-intervention counseling agencies, to assist families and communities recover from the foreclosure crisis,"" Fitzgerald said.

NeighborWorks says while money to support foreclosure prevention efforts is available, more is needed. The nonprofit organization says one of its primary objectives right now is to raise more non-government funding to provide much-needed aid to a housing market that's ""still on life support.""
