Obama Nominates Three Treasury Posts

President Barack Obama has announced the nomination of three senior advisers for key positions within the ""U.S. Treasury Department"":http://www.treasury.gov. Hand-picked for assistant secretary positions are David Cohen, to lead the administration's fight against terrorist financing; Alan Krueger, to steer economic policy; and Kim Wallace, to oversee legislative affairs. Each of the nominees is currently serving as a counselor to the Treasury secretary.
In making the announcement, President Obama said, ""Out of crisis arises opportunity. With the leadership of these accomplished individuals and our whole economic team, I am absolutely confident that we will turn around this economy and seize this opportunity to secure a more prosperous future.""

Until recently, Cohen was a partner in the law firm of WilmerHale, where he focused on complex civil litigation, white collar criminal defense, internal investigations, and anti-money laundering counseling. Immediately prior to joining the firm in 2001, Cohen worked at the Treasury Department, where he served as acting and associate deputy general counsel. Cohen was a recipient of the Treasury secretary’s award for outstanding service. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School, and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Cornell University.

Krueger is the Bendheim professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University, where he has held a joint appointment in the economics department and Woodrow Wilson School since 1987. In 1994-95 Krueger served as chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the editorial board of _Science_, and serves as chief economist for the Council for Economic Education. Krueger is also a member of the board of directors of the Russell Sage Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the American Institutes for Research. He received a B.S. degree, with honors, from Cornell University’s School of Industrial & Labor Relations in 1983, an A.M. in economics from Harvard University in 1985, and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard in 1987.

Wallace previously served as a managing director and head of the Washington Research Group at Barclays Capital. Before that he served in the same role, for 14 years, at Lehman Brothers Inc. From 1989-1994, Wallace served as a legislative aide to then-Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, specializing in fiscal policy. He also worked three years as an analyst on the Senate Budget Committee, under then-Chairman Lawton Chiles. Wallace received an M.S in business from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. in government from the University of Texas at Austin.
