HOPE LoanPort Now Live in All 50 States, D.C. and Puerto Rico

HOPE LoanPort, a proprietary, Web-based tool used by non-profit housing counselors, housing finance agencies, investors, and major mortgage servicers, recently added North Dakota to its roster, making it live in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The nonprofit organization, which recently completed its first full year of operation, allows housing counselors to submit an application, including the upload of homeowner documents, for home retention in a secure environment.

Foreclosure Starts and Sales Post Sharp Declines in April: Report

Both new foreclosure actions and completed foreclosure sales took a dive in April after rising sharply the month before, according to industry data released Wednesday. Foreclosure starts nationwide totaled approximately 163,000 in April, while foreclosure sales dropped to 73,000, reports the industry alliance HOPE NOW. At the same time, though, proprietary loan modifications also declined. HOPE NOW says the performance of these loan mods has remained ""steady,"" with a re-default rate of 20 percent.

Servicers Modify 210K Loans Through Own Programs in Q1: Report

An estimated 210,000 homeowners received permanent, proprietary loan modifications from mortgage servicers during the first quarter of 2011, according to data released by HOPE NOW Monday. That's down nearly 20 percent from the fourth quarter of last year, and 40 percent fewer than the third quarter of 2010. While the quarterly totals indicate a significant slide in modification activity, servicers reported an uptick during March, but HOPE NOW's data also show an increase in foreclosure activity for the month.

Mortgage Mods Slip Below 100K Mark for First Time in Over a Year

Mortgage servicers had been completing over 100,000 loan modifications per month since late 2009, but that streak came to an end in February. HOPE NOW reports that 87,083 homeowners received permanent loan modifications - through both proprietary and government programs - during the month of February. That's about 14 percent fewer than the previous month and the first time the organization's modification tally has fallen below the 100K mark in nearly a year and a half.

Foreclosure Sales in January Up, Permanent Mods Down

Data released Thursday from HOPE NOW shows that while permanent loan modifications outpaced foreclosure sales in the month of January, the gap between the two is getting smaller. In January there were around 101,000 permanent loan modifications completed, down from 111,000 in December 2010. Servicers' proprietary modifications outpaced HAMP mods by almost three to one. At the same time, foreclosure sales in January totaled 73,000, up from 58,000 the month before.

House Hearing Outlines Government Barriers to Housing Recovery

On Wednesday a House subcommittee held a hearing to examine private sector involvement in the housing market, in order to determine if the high amount of government participation is a hindrance to the sector's recovery. Rep. Judy Biggert, subcommittee chair, said government intervention in the housing market reached record levels during the financial crisis, resulting in a cost to taxpayers of hundreds of billions of dollars. The hearing examined options for removing barriers to private investment in the housing market.

Three Congressmen Call for HAMP’s End

In more bad news for the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), three congressmen, Reps. Jim Jordan, Patrick McHenry, and Darrell Issa have proposed a bill to end the program. Issa is chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee and introduced the bill at the committee's first hearing last week. HAMP took a beating at the hearing from the lawmakers. They called the program a ""colossal failure"" and said it's just one more example of why government interference in the private sector doesn't work.
