The United States Senate voted 71-26 Wednesday to confirm former San Antonio, Texas Mayor Julian Castro as the next Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Castro replaces outgoing Secretary Shaun Donovan who is leaving to serve as the Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Appearing before the Senate Banking Committee for his nomination hearing, Julian Castro, whose work in San Antonio includes an initiative to spark private investment for the production of thousands of additional housing units in the city in 2014 alone, opened his testimony with reassurances that his leadership would have HUD focusing on "outcomes, not only inputs."

The White House has made it official: President Obama has nominated San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro as the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Castro had been the rumored frontrunner for the position, but wasn't officially announced and hadn't accepted the nomination until recently.

President Obama is expected to nominate current San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro as the new secretary of housing and urban development. Castro would take the place of current director Shaun Donovan, who is to become director of the Office of Management and Budget.
