The National Association of Home Builders reported the First American Improving Markets Index rose for the fifth consecutive month in January. The index reached 242 and once again, achieved a record high. The index measured 201 in December. According to the NAHB, the list of improving markets now includes entrants from 48 states and the District of Columbia. The only states not represented are Kansas and New Mexico.

PHH Corporation announced Wednesday that its board of directors has elected Glen Messina president and CEO. Messina, who has served as COO since joining the company in July 2011, will take his position at the helm of the mortgage outsourcer immediately, PHH said. Messina succeeds Jerome Selitto, the company's president and CEO since October 2009. PHH said Selitto has resigned from his post, effective immediately.

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) released its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending August 15, 2008 today. The new stats show mortgage applications declined only slightly from last week, but have now hit their lowest level since December 2000.

Washington, D.C.-based The Appraisal Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the professional development of the appraisal profession, is accepting applications for vacancies on its Board of Trustees, the Appraiser Qualifications Board, and the Appraisal Standards Board.
