Mortgage banking net income was $439 million, down $266 million from a year ago and $270 million from the prior quarter. Much of the year-over-year decline stemmed from a reduced benefit from credit loss provisions—$19 million compared to last year's $1 billion.

Citigroup reported an increase of 7 percent in its net income from $3.2 billion up to $3.4 billion year-over-year in the company's 2014 Third Quarter Earnings Report released on Tuesday.

Citigroup's second-quarter profits took a major hit as the bank announced a settlement with the government to resolve securities claims. Citi released its quarterly earnings report Monday morning, posting net profit of $181 million—a decline of 96 percent compared to earnings of $4.2 billion a year ago.

Wells Fargo reported strong financials for the second quarter, driven in part by an uptick in mortgage lending and ongoing improvements in credit quality.

Freddie Mac released on Thursday its quarterly earnings report for the end of 2013, revealing yet another strong quarter—the ninth straight. Net income at the enterprise totaled $8.6 billion in Q4. For all of 2013, Freddie Mac reported providing liquidity for 1.6 million refinances; 515,000 home purchases; and 388,000 multifamily rental units.
