Pam Patenaude was advanced by the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday afternoon as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, although she still must pass the Senate confirmation vote. Patenaude was received favorably by all members of the committee, aside from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) who requested to be recorded as a no vote.

The 2017 Housing Budget appeared in front of the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee Thursday morning and was met with strong words from its members. While defending the proposal, Secretary Carson remained poised, articulate, and open as he fielded questions and concerns. He went on to say that the playbook needed to be changed because, “the pie is only so big.”

HUD Secretary Ben Carson is preparing for a big June as he kicks off the newly proclaimed National Homeownership Month with a forum at his own agency today. He’ll also go before Congress next week to discuss potential HUD budget cuts via Trump’s recent 2018 budget blueprint, which slashes the agency’ funding by more than $6 billion. The cuts will also significantly reduce HUD’s rental assistance program, which Carson recently discussed in a Sirius XM radio interview.

According to HUD Secretary Ben Carson, with “the right mindset,” many of the low-income citizens using his department’s services could cease to need them. Carson said as much in a recent radio interview, when he talked poverty, housing, and the role the government should play in both. The interview comes on the back of President Trump’s recent 2018 budget blueprint, which includes more than $6 billion in cuts to the HUD budget.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration announced its proposed 2018 budget. Included in the budget are several cuts to Department of Housing and Urban Development programs, including cutting the funding to the Community Development Block Grant Program, as well as the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, HOME Investment Partnerships Program, and the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program.
