According to Redfin, overall homebuying slowed in 2023 because it was the least affordable year on record and there was a severe supply shortage.

The tech hub of Austin, Texas, has been a beacon of migration during the pandemic, but tastes are changing, leading to Nashville becoming a destination hotspot for the first time since 2021.

Today, many Americans can live just about anywhere while working from home. Remote workers looking to move far away from their current residence might not have the time, resources, or motivation to make multiple trips between their current and future cities, but virtual tours combined with other data brings far-flung homes to buyers’ front steps.

Annual home appreciation relaxed, but CoreLogic predicts that the market will “start regaining steam” later this year.

“Greater growth in cross-market activity in the Northeast has elevated the out-of-market shopping share from roughly on par with the Midwest and South in 2020 to a clear second place in 2023,” said Jiayi Xu, an economist for Realtor.com.

“Overall, the study revealed that Raleigh, North Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; and St. Louis are the three best metropolitan areas for homeownership. Each of these metros ranks among the lowest for share of homes lacking complete plumbing and kitchen facilities (both are lowest in Raleigh), meaning they appear to have relatively high-quality housing available,” said LendingTree Senior Economist Jacob Channel.

“One of the most cost-effective states to live in, according to the study, is South Dakota. The state offers many natural wonders, including the famous Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Badlands National Park, and the Black Hills National Forest,” United Region Van Lines said.
